Decoding The Mystery of Hanging Coffins.


With the evolution of mankind and different cultures many peculiar traditions came into existence. Man is always curious about what happens to the soul after death. Mystery of hanging coffins is a weird tradition practiced in China, Philippines and Indonesia.

There are few communities existing in China, Philippines and Indonesia who don’t believe in burning or burying the corpse. Rather they like to hang them on cliffs so that soul can meet their ancestors in heaven without any hindrance.

This type of burial tradition is more than 3000 year old. Till date Sagada community of Indonesia, Igorot community of Philippines and Bo and Guyue minority community of China practice such tradition.

They chemically treat the corpse so that it won’t decay soon. They place them to small coffins by breaking bones of the corpse to fit into coffins before hanging them to cliffs. They say that their elderly never want to get buried and get decayed in the soil. Another reason for such a tradition is that they encourage scavenger to feed on the corpse and keep the land clean for agricultural use.

Now this traditional is slowly dying. Yet people visit to see the coffins.
